Why should you switch to eco-friendly sponges?
Traditional synthetic kitchen sponges are composed of petroleum-based polyurethane, which makes them resistant to biodegradation. Every time you wash up using one, small pieces of sponge, a type of microplastic, are washed down the drain into our water systems. The microplastics cannot be removed from water or soil because of their small size. They arrive to the ocean and stay there until they are consumed by marine life, or ingested by humans. Over 800 million synthetic sponges discarded each year in Europe alone and it takes hundreds of years for every single plastic sponge to decompose. Natural sponges, made from plant fibers, can take up to 5 years to break down completely. Pure cellulose sponges decompose within a few weeks in soil.
